case study: battery-operated smoke detectors. fire safety regulations in most canadian provinces require all homes to have a working smoke alarm on every floor and outside all sleeping areas. the intent for this project was to design a smoke detector that users will not resent having in their living room.

hardware stores such as canadian tire, rona or lowe’s try to make their female customers feel more at home in their stores by adding decorative accents and putting more emphasis on well-designed goods. however, the battery operated smoke detectors currently available in these stores look utilitarian compared to other items that are placed on or near the ceiling of a room (light fixtures, drapery hardware etc.). Shown here: design concept 1.
